Local note:UBC Library copy complete except that the “To the Reader” leaf (leaf A1) is supplied from a Second Folio. Title-page mounted at an early date on old leaf within manuscript rule-frame. Final leaf mounted on a stub, but original and from this copy. This copy has the binding variant in which the preliminary signature designated "[superscript pi][B]²" has been inserted before [superscript pi]A6. Bound by L. Staggemeier and Samuel Welcher in red morocco, tooled in gilt and blind, edges gilt. Listed as number 202 in: Rasmussen, E. Shakespeare First Folios. Listed as number 5174 in the Shakespeare Census.

Mostly in verse.
The first collected edition of the plays of William Shakespeare. Two of his fellow actors and closest friends, John Heminge and Henry Condell, undertook the work of editing the text and supervising the printing by Isaac Jaggard and Edward Blount. Only half of Shakespeare's plays had been published previously, all in smaller formats and some poorly edited.
With an engraved title-page portrait of the author signed: "Martin· Droeshout: sculpsit· London." The first state of the portrait has no shadow on the collar; the second state (found in this second issue of the first folio edition) has a shadow.
Colophon reads: Printed at the charges of W. Jaggard, Ed. Blount, I. Smithweeke, and W. Aspley. 1623.

"The life and death of King Iohn" begins new pagination on leaf a1r; "The tragedy of Coriolanus" begins new pagination on leaf 2a1r.
Error in pagination: 399 misnumbered 993.
