      "This work contains a general review of the United States claims to the Oregon country based on the history of discovery and settlement in the Northwest, as well as statements by Wyeth, Greenhow, Wilkes, and Fremont, including the latter's table of distances. It also contains a portion of a letter from Hugh Burns dated Multnomah City, Oregon Territory, October 29, 1844, with advice to immigrants and the 'Resolutions of the Oregon Emigrating Society.' The latter sets out rules of conduct for traveling on the plains."--The Plains and the Rockies.
      "Appendix, containing the diplomatic correspondence, treaties and negotiations, between Russia, Spain, Great Britain and the United States, as contained in the excellent work of Lieutenant George Wilkes": pages [i]-xxiv.
      The addition of "Jr." to the author's name on the title page is curious: his father's name was William; his son, born in 1851, was called Wyndham Robertson, Jr.
