Summary:Edward Thornton Tayloe accompanied United States' Minister Poinsett to Mexico as a self-sustaining private secretary. Here he recorded the earliest objective, long-term, eyewitness account of Mexico and Mexican life by an American citizen following the recognition of Mexican independence by the United States. In the course of more than two thousand miles of travel within Mexico, Tayloe marveled at antiquities, studied the contemporary scene, and forecast economic and political prospects.
