Summary:"In 1984, the Canadian Education Association (CEA) published the report Recent Developments in Native Education, which provided an important glimpse of a number of interesting directions in First Nations education. The present report is the result of a similar project, initiated by CEA in 1991 with the goal of disseminating information about further developments in First Nations education. Elementary and secondary schools were the focus of the project; federal, public, separate and band schools were surveyed. In addition, submissions and descriptions of programs and directives were requested from each provincial and territorial Department or Ministry of Education.... The results of the survey make it clear that the ICIE [Indian Control of Indian Education] policy hashad some impact and that some progress has been made in a number of important areas ... However, many more initiatives must be undertaken at all levels if the system is to be responsive to the needs of the First Nations children of today and tomorrow, as outlined in the ICIE document." -- Foreword.
