Summary:Some key indicators of school readiness are linked to social emotional development. Among these are persistence at difficult tasks, the ability to express emotions appropriately, to make and sustain relationships with peers and adults, to negotiate and cooperate in a group setting, and confidence. When children don't have these skills, they are less likely to benefit from even the best instruction and they are more likely to engage in challenging behavior. This video presents concrete strategies caregivers and teachers can use to model, practice, and reinforce behaviors such as turn taking, helping others, sharing both things and feelings, asking for help, and cooperation. Helping children learn to manage their own behavior in preschool significantly affects their later life success.
