    • Summary:The studio system was a production line like any other factory, bringing all the pieces (stars, scripts, directors, producers) together to make prefab pictures that stayed under budget and turned a profit. But sometimes all the pieces fit together so well that the result transcended anything anyone ever expected. Though the production of "Casablanca" was run-of-the-mill, the film is anything but. Its story of an American saloon keeper in Nazi-occupied Casablanca whose conscience is reawakened by the appearance of an old flame is about as iconic as Hollywood movies get. Humphrey Bogart is Rick Blaine, an American expatriate who'd rather run out the war in neutral anonymity. His motto is "I stick my neck out for nobody". But his isolationist ideals are put to the test when his old flame Ilsa Lund (Ingrid Bergman) walks into his saloon with her husband, Victor Laszlo, a famous French resistance fighter, looking for safe passage to Lisbon. Standing in their way are Captain Renault (Claude Rains), a French (Vichy) functionary and Major Strasser (Conrad Veidt), a ruthless Nazi. The events that follow find our hero pondering the relative value of a hill of beans and embarking on a beautiful friendship. --EH "Of all the gin-joints in all the towns in all the world, she walks into mine. " DVD & VHS feature the documentary "You Must Remember This", the original trailers, outtakes and an intro by Lauren Bacall.
