Brief essays discuss folding techniques, the process of creating illustrated pieces, and paper choices. Interspersed are over 150 tipped-in examples from pleating, education, computational geometry, toy making, origami and packaging (some examples are presented shown in progress, as well as finished pieces, in a variety of papers)"--Heavenly Monkey blog (www.heavenlymonkeybooks.blogspot.com)
    • Notes:"This book was designed and composed in Monotype Fournier by Barbara Hodgson. The specimens were folded by Barbara Hodgson & Claudia Cohen from a variety of papers. The edition is 30 numbered and six a.p. copies, each signed by the two authors. Claudia Cohen bound each copy in her Seattle studio. David Clifford at Black Stone Press in Vancouver printed the text on Arches mouldmade."--Colophon
Title page of the specimen book, a piece of folded paper art itself, was printed separately at Heavenly Monkey on a handpress. Essays are printed and specimens are displayed on leaves of heavy black and white papers, with deckle edges. The book is bound in red and black leather and black pastepaper boards, decorated with gilt rules and gilt geometric patterned rolled borders.
The Chinese paper thread box, or "zhen xian bao," is a traditional paper container, folded origami-style into various compartments, typically used for storing thread, needles, paper patterns, or personal memorabilia. The "zhen xian bao," made of purple, green, orange and cream papers, is presented flat, folded in half; when opened, twelve small compartments appear, six on each side, concealing 10 small rectangular boxes; the two sides can be lifted to form a large rectangular box. Housed in a portfolio of thick gray paper with deckle edges, and blind-stamped title "Zhen Xian Bao."
The case is black silk and red leather, with black pastepaper and red leather lid; affixed to upper surface of lid are red and gray pastepaper strips in a zig-zag folding pattern, gold-ruled black leather triangles, and a gold-stamped black leather title label. The floor of the case is divided into 11 compartments holding 13 three-dimensional folded paper shapes made of various white, colored, and marbled papers. Each of the shapes may be identified by consulting the "map" to the contents of the box found on the page before the colophon of specimen book, which includes the name of the folding pattern and type of paper used for each shape.
Includes bibliographical references (pages 73-77 of specimen book).
