Es handelt sich um fiktive Planer, deren Konzepte jedoch auf wissenschaftlichen Untersuchungen basieren und deren Argumentation durch umfangreiches Kartenmaterial und Visualisierungen untermauert wird. Das Buch bietet eine gut zugängliche, detaillierte Darstellung des amerikanischen Phänomens "Vorstadt" als spezifischer Lebensstil, der zugleich in urbanen wie suburbanen Räumen zu finden ist. Dabei wird deutlich, dass politische Lösungen zu den Problemen des suburbanen Raums ? wie etwa Zersiedlung ? weit über den Ansatz hinausgehen müssen, Vorstädte nur als homogene Areale zu betrachten, die lediglich der Urbanisierung bedürfen.
