    • Biography/history note:Watson Thomson was born in Glasgow, Scotland and graduated from Glasgow University with an M.A. in 1923. After training as a teacher, he went to Nigeria as Superintendent of Education (1927-1931). Ill-health forced him to return to London and he became co-editor of the English weekly "New Britain". In 1937, he came to Canada and became a member of the Alberta Extension Department and a regular commentator for CBC (until 1944). In 1941, Thomson was appointed Director of Adult Education at the University of Manitoba and, three years later, assumed the same position at the University of Saskatchewan. Thomson joined the staff of the University of British Columbia in 1950 and became internationally known for the specialized English course he developed for engineering and forestry students. Ill-health forced him to retire from the university in 1960.
